picture of Pond and Koi

Nothing can compare to sitting back beside a pond admiring the graceful waterlillies and watching the movement of the associated wildlife.

This is a very therapeutic experience, and there's no reason not to reproduce an oasis of peace and relaxation in your own garden.

The shape of the pond will depend on the size and style of the garden. Pool liners are one of the easiest and most popular, their main advantage is flexibility - allowing to fit an unusual shape once the size is calculated. For a long term liner, lasting up to fifty years, butyl rubber is worth the money and far superior to the plastic liners. The introduction of pre-formed ponds have made it much easier for us to introduce water into our gardens. The pre-formed moulds come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and are made from either fiberglass or plastic. The concrete option is expensive - but this will last forever.

To naturalise any pond, of course, there must be plants. But it's not quite as simple as that - a garden pond can't actually exist without plants.

Marginal Plants
Marginal plants, as the name suggests, grow at the edge of the pond with their roots in damp ground or some prefer their feet in a few inches of water. Some easy to grow examples include aquatic Irises, flowering Rushes, Bogarum, Mountain Marigold and Variegated Water Grass.

Floating Plants
Floating plants must cover about one third of the total surface area of the pond. This is important as too much direct sunlight will encourage the growth of algae, causing discoloured water. They include water soldiers, fairy moss and frogbit.

Oxygenating Plants
For the base of the pond, oxygenating plants have an important function as they help to clean and oxygenate the water. Some oxygenating plants include water celery and willow moss, and are essential for providing a suitable home for fish. No pond is complete without the striking flowers of the waterlily. Give them the correct depth of water and you will be handsomely rewarded with delightful displays of flowers and lush green foliage all summer.

Bringing Your Pond To Life
Without a doubt, an oramental pond does not really come to life without the introduction of fish. The variety of colours, shapes and sizes available are almost infinite. Carefully chosen, the effect can be breath-taking. During the summer months, the fish are constantly busy, searching for insects and their larvae or darting from plant to plant. Many will become tame and learn to recognize their keeper's foot-steps at feeding time. Most are very long-lived and hardy. During late spring, many species will be breeding and the eggs or fry may be removed to a separate nursery pool for rearing. You are most likely to encounter the following species:- Golden Orfe, Koi Carp, Red Comets(Sarasas), Trench, Shubunkins, and of course Goldfish.

As you can see in these pictures the plants and wildlife have reached a mature stage, and the garden looks spectacular in all seasons. The koi are hand reared and come to the surface to be fed by the owner. This garden can be viewed any time by appointment.
